Newsletter 22nd May 2017

22nd May 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

Following the ‘News Update’ email sent last week, here are some further items of information for you:

Exams: Exams continue this week and also after half term.

We are regulated and inspected regularly by JCQ, the Joint Council for Qualifications, who carryout unannounced visits. We were inspected last week and all standards of the regulations were fully met by the School.

PE and Games: We ask that your child attends school in their PE kit when they have a visit to Norman Park athletics track, bringing their uniform to school with them to change into when they return.

Normandy Trip: Twelve Senior School pupils will be taking part in our first school trip abroad from 29th June to 2nd July (inclusive). We will be holding an information meeting for on Friday 26th May at 2pm.

School Photographs: Individual, class and whole school photos will take place on 8th and 9th June. We are using a new photographer this year and are hoping to produce photographs in a different format. Please ensure your child is wearing appropriate uniform on these days.

Healthy Eating Week – A programme of activities has been arranged for Healthy Eating Week which will take place from 12th – 16th June.

Parents Morning: We will be holding Parent Information Sessions in the second half of the Summer Term, Juniors on Thursday 22nd June and Seniors on 23rd June. Senior pupils will be given appointment schedules after half term, please inform the School Office if you will be attending these information sessions.

Parent Information Sessions: We have asked the School Nurse to deliver an information session for parents on puberty and other health matters, date to be advised.

Transition Day for New Pupils: We will have a taster day, for the new Year 7 pupils joining/moving into the Seniors in September, on Tuesday 4th July. As we have organised in previous years, the new pupils will join some of the current Year 6s for a timetabled day of Senior taster lessons.

Sports Day: This year we will hold Sports Day on Wednesday 5th July. The activities will start at 1.30pm.

Community Day: We will be holding Community Day on Friday 7th July and, as in previous years, pupils will be helping out doing ‘odd jobs’ in the local community. These activities will take place in the morning and we will then have a BBQ at school in the afternoon.

Parent Questionnaire and School Development Plan: Thank you to all the parents that have returned the questionnaires, we are analysing the responses and will provide feedback after half term.

Sun Cream and Hats: In anticipation of more seasonal weather we ask that pupils have sun cream in school for the hot weather. Hats should be suitable for school without any inappropriate logos.

Safeguarding: Here is another Safeguarding news item from Andrew Hall, Specialist Safeguarding Consultant: implicated in sudden death of Year 10 boy: Tragically, a 15-year old boy took his own life last week in response to online bullying and trolling. It was reported that some of the abuse came via the social media website,, which we have highlighted in the safeguarding briefing over the last few weeks. The Estonia-based website is currently inaccessible saying ‘We are temporarily closed for maintenance reasons’.  Owners of the site told the Daily Telegraph: “We have been made aware by police that they are investigating a bullying related suicide and we offer our sincere condolences to those affected by this loss. We deplore bullying of any kind and want it to have no place on our site. We will offer any assistance we can to the police. We have suspended use of the website to show how seriously we take these matters.”

Photograph Albums: These are now on display in the lobby, please take time to view these when you visit the school.

Medication: Please advise the School Office in writing if there has been any change in medication for your child.

Absences: If your child is unwell or unable to come to school for any reason please contact the school before 10am either via phone, text message or email. If we do not receive any communications regarding an absence, it will be recorded as unauthorised. Please provide a written explanation for the absence when your child returns to school.

Dyslexia Association: “The Puzzling World of Maths” is the title of a presentation on Wednesday 24th May, guest speaker is Jayne Morkill. Doors open at 7.45pm at St. Nicholas Church Hall (Village Hall), Church Lane, Chislehurst BR7 5PE, for our very brief AGM with the presentation starting at 8pm.
