6th March 2017

Dear Parents/ Carers,

The second half of the Spring Term is proving to be very busy; here are some updates on recent and forthcoming events:

Mock Exams: Mock exams are taking place in school at the moment. These mocks are being conducted in strict exam conditions and pupils are coping very well. Please be mindful that exams/assessments may be taking place if you visit the school.

World Book Day: On Thursday 2nd March we celebrated World Book Day with pupils and staff dressing up as characters from their favourite books. We collected donations for Book Aid International.

Swimming Gala: A group of pupils will be taking part in a swimming gala on Friday 10th March, we wish them well in their events.

Charity and Fund Raising Update:

Walk for Water: On 15th March Brown’s School will be supporting this global awareness and fund raising campaign, see attached flyer. We will walk to raise funds for the construction of drinking water facilities (solar powered borehole, water tower and watertaps) at Abaozor Community Primary School, Udi, Nigeria. This event is being supported by the Rotary Club who will be in attendance on the day. Mr Ponulak delivered an assembly to pupils on Monday and received an amazing response from them. At the assembly on Monday pupils were shown an example of a backpack with water in it, 26 students stated they would like to walk the 5 miles (50 x around the circuit on the grass area) with a backpack containing litre bottles of water. We will of course risk assess the event and monitor the pupils’ welfare during the activity.

Would you please save your empty water/soft drinks bottles (the 2 litre size is ideal) and send them into school. Pupils taking part will need a rucksack for the walk. A sponsor form is also attached and we are grateful for your support.

The School also bakes cakes and biscuits for a local Homeless charity every week. Mr Ponulak coordinates the baking and distribution of the cakes and biscuits; the recipients have been sending ‘thank you’ comments into school. This work contributes to our focus on community; we plan to have another themed day promoting community values in the Summer Term.

Assessment Week: All pupils will take part in Literacy and Maths assessments during the week beginning 20th March. The results will inform pupils’ termly targets.

Policies: There are a number of policies available from the school office. Most recent policies that have been updated include the Safeguarding Policy, Anti-Bullying Policy and Peer on Peer Abuse Policy. The Behaviour Policy is being reviewed this week and will be available next week.

Therapy Team: If you would like advice from our therapists please contact Mrs Mitchell or the Therapists direct to make an appointment. Murray Small, Clinical Psychologist, is in school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is also available for consultation.

Uniform and PE Kits: Please would you check your child’s uniform and PE kit as we have a number of pupils missing items of clothing.

Absences: If your child is unwell or unable to come to school for any reason please contact the school before 10am either via phone, text message or email. If we do not receive any communications regarding an absence, it will be recorded as unauthorised. Please provide a written explanation for the absence when your child returns to school.

Adverse Weather Conditions: In the event that we may have to close the school due to challenging weather, we will notify parents by texts, phone calls and emails.
