Newsletter 28th April 2017

28th April 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you have all had a pleasant break. Our pupils have returned to Brown’s full of enthusiasm for the new term.

Here are some items of news and updates on information for you:

Exams: A number of our Senior pupils will be taking part in formal exams this term. We ask that if you are visiting the school you are mindful that examinations may be taking place. We will post a notice on the lobby door if an exam is in progress. As well as the exams themselves, other components that contribute to the overall results have to take place, such as speaking and listening activities, coursework and controlled assessments. This can be a challenging time for some of our pupils but we support any anxieties with a high level of pastoral care; please inform staff if you have any concerns about your child. Parents have been sent the exam schedules for their child.

Seniors’ Target Setting: This took place on Monday 24th April with pupils meeting with their individual tutors to review their targets from last term and set new ones for this term. Please contact the School Office or email if you would like a copy of this term’s targets.

PE and Games: We have booked weekly sessions at the Norman Park athletics track for the Summer term and we are also fortunate to also have the use of local tennis courts. We ask that pupils keep their PE kits in school all week. PE staff will be carrying out regular kit inspections, please inform staff if your child does not have any appropriate PE clothing.

We have taken part in a number of sports matches this academic year including badminton competitions, a swimming gala, basketball and football matches and we have been quite successful. This is a credit to our pupils and also the dedication of our sports staff.

Swimming: Jade tutor group will be swimming every Wednesday this half of the Summer term at the Walnuts Leisure Centre.

School Nurse: The School Nurse visited Brown’s again this week to conclude the programme of health talks she has been delivering to the Senior classes.

NHS Go: The School Nurse informed us about this health advice app for smartphones that has been developed by young people for young people.

BEECHE School: Jade tutor group and some of the Juniors will attend Forest School at the Bromley Environmental Education Centre High Elms every Monday.

Orpington Library: We will be continuing our visits to the local library during the Summer Term.

Healthy Eating Week – A programme of activities has been arranged for Healthy Eating Week which will take place from 12th – 16th June.

Parents Morning: We will be holding Parents Morning in the second half of the Summer Term, date to be advised.

Parent Information Sessions: We have asked the School Nurse to deliver an information session for parents on puberty and other health matters, date to be advised.

Normandy Trip: Twelve Senior School pupils will be taking part in our first school trip abroad from 29th June to 2nd July (inclusive). We will be holding an information meeting for parents soon.

Transition Day for New Pupils: We will have a taster day, for the new Year 7 pupils joining/moving into the Seniors in September, on Tuesday 4th July. As we have organised in previous years, the new pupils will join some of the current Year 6s for a timetabled day of Senior taster lessons.

Subject Information: This will be sent out to parents via email.

Sports Day: This year we will hold Sports Day on Wednesday 5th July. The activities will start at 1.30pm.

Community Day: We will be holding Community Day on Friday 7th July and, as in previous years, pupils will be helping out doing ‘odd jobs’ in the local community. These activities will take place in the morning and we will then have a BBQ at school in the afternoon.

Parent Questionnaire and School Development Plan: We have sent out the updated School Development Plan and a parent questionnaire, please would you return the questionnaire by Friday 5th May.

Uniform: We will be carrying out regular uniform checks this term. Please inform staff if there is a particular difficulty with items of uniform.

Sun Cream and Hats: Hopefully, the weather will improve! We ask that pupils have sun cream in school for the hot weather. Hats should be suitable for school without any inappropriate logos.

Safeguarding: We receive a range of safeguarding information from a variety of sources. The following advice came from Andrew Hall, Specialist Safeguarding Consultant: Social media posts about ‘Blue Whale’: The posts urge you to share the posts to protect young people from a viral suicide game. The ‘Blue Whale’ story is a hoax, or fake news, something which is permeating almost every news area recently. Penny Patterson, Senior Inspector for Quality Assurance in the London Borough of Havering, has written an advice sheet which can be downloaded:

Photograph Albums: These are now on display in the lobby, please take time to view these when you visit the school.

Medication: Please advise the School Office in writing if there has been any change in medication for your child.

Absences: If your child is unwell or unable to come to school for any reason please contact the school before 10am either via phone, text message or email. If we do not receive any communications regarding an absence, it will be recorded as unauthorised. Please provide a written explanation for the absence when your child returns to school.
